2026 AirHelp Score: worst 10 airports in the world

Some are charming, some are chaotic. But all have room to grow.

Every airport has a story. Some feel like a warm welcome, a reassuring sign that the adventure is beginning, or that you're finally going home. Others feel like... a test of character.

Each year, the AirHelp Score analyses hundreds of airports worldwide, looking at how often flights run on time, how satisfied passengers are with the experience, and how well the facilities measure up. This year, we analysed 279 airports from 76 countries, using data from 1 May 2025 to 30 April 2026.

These rankings aren't about embarrassing airports or the cities they serve. They're about listening to passengers. Because when terminals get congested, flights keep getting delayed, or the basics are missing, travelers notice. And they tell us about it.

So, with a fair mind and a sympathetic eye, here are the 10 lowest-ranking airports of 2026.

10th: Barbados Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) — Barbados

AirHelp Score: 6.67  |  Rank 270 of 279

This one stings a little, because Barbados is, by any reasonable measure, a near-perfect destination. White sand beaches, calm turquoise seas, flying fish and cou-cou, rum punch at sunset. It is genuinely wonderful.

And Grantley Adams has its moments too. Travelers note the genuine friendliness of staff who clearly love their island, and the terminal is clean and reasonably easy to navigate.

The data is blunt: only 67% of flights are on time, and with a cancellation rate of around 1%, disruptions here are notably higher than at most comparable airports. A destination this spectacular deserves better, and we fully expect Grantley Adams to work its way off this list. 🌊🏝

9th: Rhodes Diagoras Airport (RHO) — Greece

AirHelp Score: 6.67  |  Rank 271 of 279

Rhodes is dreamy. Whitewashed villages, a medieval old town, turquoise water, and warm evenings that feel made for long meals and cold white wine. Arriving at Diagoras Airport is, for many visitors, the first reality check.

It's a small airport serving a hugely popular island, and during the summer months the seams show. Slow check-ins, crowded halls, and a general feeling that the infrastructure hasn't kept pace with the island's popularity. Only 65% of flights are on time — one of the lowest rates in this year's entire ranking.

And yet there's something oddly endearing about Diagoras. It's compact, easy enough to navigate once you're through, and the destination waiting outside more than compensates. With investment and better scheduling, this airport could rise dramatically. For now, bring a good book. 📚

8th: Da Nang Airport (DAD) — Vietnam

AirHelp Score: 6.67  |  Rank 272 of 279

Da Nang is a gorgeous city: beaches, ancient Hoi An nearby, the Marble Mountains, excellent seafood. The airport is a modern facility handling international routes with increasing ambition. But on-time performance is its Achilles' heel — just 60% of flights are on time — and passenger satisfaction scores reflect the frustration.

Vietnam has three airports in this year's bottom 10, a pattern that speaks to the extraordinary speed of the country's tourism growth, and infrastructure that hasn't quite kept up with demand.

Da Nang is a destination that warrants better. The airport knows it. Progress is expected. 🏖

7th: Hanoi Nội Bài International Airport (HAN) — Vietnam

AirHelp Score: 6.66  |  Rank 273 of 279

Vietnam's aviation industry has surged in recent years, and Nội Bài, Hanoi's main international hub, is feeling that pressure. The airport has been investing in improvements: new terminals, more amenities, better signage. And many travelers appreciate the progress.

But in 2026, delays are still outpacing the upgrades, and during busy periods the terminal can feel stretched.

Among this year's lowest-ranked airports, Nội Bài feels like one with genuine momentum. A country this incredible deserves an airport experience that matches it. We're rooting for you, Hanoi. 🌺

6th: Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) — Portugal

AirHelp Score: 6.58  |  Rank 274 of 279

Lisbon is, by most measures, one of Europe's most beloved cities: sunshine, pastéis de nata, hills, and the Tagus glittering below. Its airport, however, continues to be a source of frustration for the millions who pass through it each year.

Humberto Delgado has simply grown faster than its footprint. Staff are professional and the terminal has charm, but the infrastructure struggles under the volume. Delays stack up, queues stretch, and only 63% of flights are on time — a figure that tells its own story for one of Europe's busiest tourist gateways.

Plans for a new Lisbon airport have been discussed for years. Until those materialise, expect the experience to lag behind the city's considerable reputation. The nata, at least, will be excellent once you're through.

5th: Islamabad International Airport (ISB) — Pakistan

AirHelp Score: 6.55  |  Rank 275 of 279

Pakistan's capital city has a relatively modern airport. Islamabad International opened in 2018 and it's a spacious facility by most measures. The bones are good. But on-time performance and passenger satisfaction continue to hold it back.

Travelers appreciate the clean, open design, but report that the experience can feel inconsistent, particularly during busy periods. With the infrastructure in place, Islamabad has the raw materials to improve significantly. A modern airport with room to grow into its potential. 🕌

4th: Hurghada International Airport (HRG) — Egypt

AirHelp Score: 6.51  |  Rank 276 of 279

Hurghada is a gateway to Egypt's Red Sea coast: coral reefs, warm water, and all-inclusive resorts as far as the eye can see. The airport serves millions of European charter holidaymakers each year, and it shows.

During high season, the volume of traffic exceeds the airport's comfortable capacity. Passengers describe a no-frills environment where things work, but not always smoothly. Delays are a consistent issue, particularly on European routes.

With more reliable scheduling and continued investment, Hurghada could lift itself off this list. 🐠

3rd: Ho Chi Minh City Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) — Vietnam

AirHelp Score: 6.48  |  Rank 277 of 279

Ho Chi Minh City is one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic and exciting destinations. Its airport, sadly, is struggling to keep pace with the demand that enthusiasm generates.

Tan Son Nhat was once seen as one of the region's most promising airports. In 2026 it sits third from the bottom. Only 57% of flights are on time — the second-lowest rate in this year's entire ranking — and passengers report congestion at passport control, long waits, and a general sense of overwhelm during busy periods.

A major new international airport, Long Thanh, is in development nearby, and the hope is that it will transform air travel to this brilliant city. Until then, patience is a useful packing item. 🛫

2nd: Lahore Allama Iqbal International Airport (LHE) — Pakistan

AirHelp Score: 6.40  |  Rank 278 of 279

Lahore is Pakistan's cultural capital, a city of Mughal gardens, some of the subcontinent's finest food, and a warmth that travelers consistently rave about. The airport, unfortunately, doesn't quite live up to the billing.

Passengers report many disruptions — nearly 30% of flights are delayed and 10% are canceled — among the highest in this year's ranking. Lahore is a busy, important hub, and the infrastructure is visibly under strain.

Pakistan's aviation sector is growing rapidly, and the destination itself is magnificent. With sustained investment, this airport could tell a much better story. 🌹

1st (or rather, last): Tunis Carthage Airport (TUN) — Tunisia

AirHelp Score: 5.50  |  Rank 279 of 279 — the lowest-ranked airport of 2026

As the lowest-ranked airport in this year's analysis, Tunis Carthage leaves many travelers feeling weary. The numbers are stark: only 53% of flights are on time, the lowest rate of any airport in this year's ranking. Tunis Carthage finishes last for the third year running. A hat-trick nobody wanted.

And yet this isn't the full picture. Tunisia is a country rich in history, hospitality, and sun, and some travelers report improvements in border control and wayfinding since previous years. There's hope that a more ambitious vision for the airport could bring about real change.

For now, though, it's a hub that doesn't quite meet the expectations of the modern traveler. Tunisia deserves better, and here's hoping the airport catches up with the destination.

Final thoughts

These rankings aren't about shaming airports. They're about listening to passengers and helping them make informed choices backed by real data. Travel is stressful enough without confusing terminals, crowded lounges, or endless delays. But there's real optimism here too.

Many of the airports on this list are already changing: upgrading systems, planning expansions, and investing in the kind of experience that passengers deserve. Vietnam is building a new international hub. Lisbon's plans are (slowly) progressing. Tunisia is working to improve year on year.

Great destinations can have tricky airports, and a difficult boarding experience doesn't diminish what waits on the other side.

That said, when things do go wrong — delays, cancellations, missed connections — it's worth knowing your rights. Under EU law, you may be entitled to compensation of up to €600. AirHelp makes checking quick and completely free.
