Quick facts
Iberia online check-in
Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure, on the Iberia website and in the Iberia app.
It stays open until 1 hour before the scheduled departure time.
You get in with the passenger's surname and a booking code or ticket number, or by logging in to Iberia Club.
At the airport, check-in for a long-haul flight closes 60 minutes before departure at airports other than Madrid.
Boarding closes 20 minutes before departure.
Checking in at the airport is free at every airport Iberia serves.
When Iberia check-in opens and closes
Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure, on the Iberia website and in the Iberia app, and it stays open until 1 hour before the scheduled departure time. A few destinations close earlier, for example, 90 minutes before departure at Lagos and San José, and 180 minutes before departure at Caracas.

Iberia does open check-in earlier than 24 hours on some flights, from the moment the ticket is bought. That applies to domestic flights and flights within the Schengen Area operated by the Iberia Group, meaning Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum. A flight between the United States and Spain sits outside the Schengen Area, so the 24-hour window is the one that applies.
The deadline at the airport
There is a second deadline, and it is the one that decides whether you fly. Iberia gives 45 minutes as its general check-in time limit, but the figure changes with the type of flight and the airport.
For a long-haul flight leaving an airport other than Madrid, which covers every Iberia departure from the United States, check-in closes 60 minutes before departure. Leaving Madrid on a long-haul flight, the cut-off is 55 minutes, from the satellite building of Terminal 4.
Missing that deadline has a stated consequence: passengers who have not completed check-in within the time limit will not be accepted for the flight. Being turned away for that reason does not carry the same rights as denied boarding on a flight you checked in for on time, where compensation can be due.
What you need to open your booking
The Iberia check-in page offers two ways to access your booking.
With your flight details. Enter the passenger's surname together with either the booking code or the ticket number, then select Check in online.
With an Iberia Club account. Log in with your email address or your Iberia Club number and your password. Signing in through Google or Facebook is offered as well.
Either route leads to the same place: your seat, any extras you want to add, and your boarding pass.
How Iberia online check-in works
Online check-in runs on Iberia.com from a computer or a tablet, and in the Iberia app on iPhone and Android. The steps are the same either way.
How to check in online with Iberia:
Open Iberia online check-in on the website, or in the Iberia app.
Enter the passenger's surname with the booking code or the ticket number, or log in to your Iberia Club account.
Choose your seat, where your fare allows it.
Get your boarding pass.
One restriction is worth knowing before you start. Online check-in is not available at every airport Iberia serves, and where it is not, the boarding pass has to be collected at the airport instead. Iberia adds that on travel to or from the United States, the authorities may not allow online check-in in some cases. Either way, checking in at the airport is free at every airport Iberia serves.
Your boarding pass and what to do at the airport
At the end of the process, you can choose the format and how you want to receive your boarding pass. Iberia issues boarding passes as a PDF, as a QR code, or as a pass for your phone's wallet. All three can be downloaded there and then, and the PDF and QR versions can also be sent to you by email. The Iberia app offers the same three formats.
The QR version is a 2D code holding all your flight details, and it is the one scanned at the airport. Whichever format you pick, you need one boarding pass for every flight or flight segment, so a trip with a connection means two.
Your boarding pass is used at the airport check-in desk, at security and at the boarding gate.
If your boarding pass does not arrive
If you have checked in but do not have your boarding pass, Iberia provides a way to retrieve it. Log back in to online check-in and, at the bottom of the page under What do you want to do?, select Print boarding passes. From there you pick the format and how you want it sent.
If you simply forget to bring your boarding passes, the check-in machines at the airport will print them, and the check-in desks can issue a copy.
Two things to know before you check in
Some bookings can be checked in online but not completed there. If you are traveling with a pet in the cabin, have booked the unaccompanied minor service, or could not prove your resident status, you check in as normal and then collect the boarding pass at the airport.
And once a boarding pass has been issued, it cannot be canceled. If you then do not go to the gate, you are recorded as a no-show, and the change and refund conditions of your fare apply from there.
Checked in, but your flight is delayed or canceled
Getting your boarding pass is the last part of the journey in your hands. A delay, a cancellation or an overbooked flight can still get in the way of your plans.
Flights to and from the European Union are covered by EC 261, because Iberia is a European airline. If the airline is responsible for the disruption, you may be owed up to $650, depending on how far you were due to fly. The rules can apply in both directions: a flight leaving an airport in the EU, and a flight into the EU from the United States.
Rules on the U.S. side come from the Department of Transportation, and our guide to US air passenger rights covers them.

Keeping an eye on your flight
You've checked in, and your flight is still ahead. Iberia publishes flight status on its own site, alongside the latest updates on its flights.
For another way to keep an eye on your flight, the free AirHelp app can track it and check whether a delay, cancellation or denied boarding may entitle you to compensation.
With the AirHelp app you can:
receive real-time notifications about delays, cancellations, gate changes and baggage claim;
scan your boarding pass to add your flight quickly;
share your flight status with whoever is picking you up;
find out automatically when you are owed up to $650 in compensation;
start your claim straight from the app, with no paperwork.
The app is free and available on iOS and Android.
