Disruption overview
A technical failure in Birmingham Airport's outbound baggage system began early on 7 August 2026 and was still being cleared four days later after dozens of flights departed without most of their checked luggage. The disruption mainly affected TUI Airways and other leisure carriers flying to Rhodes, Dalaman, Paphos, Ibiza, Italian and Spanish resorts, and Scottish domestic destinations. No flights were canceled or significantly delayed, but hundreds of travelers were left buying replacement clothes, medicine, and other essentials while their bags were sent on separately. If your luggage was delayed, keep receipts for essential purchases.

Disruption details
A technical failure in Birmingham Airport's outbound baggage-handling system began early on 7 August 2026 and was still being fixed four days later, leaving passengers on departing holiday flights without most of their checked bags. For many travelers, that meant arriving at their destination with only hand luggage and then starting their trip by chasing missing baggage.
The issue was inside the automated sorting equipment used for outbound luggage. Birmingham Airport said most carousels were back online over the weekend, but temporary workarounds were still needed while teams continued to clear the problem.
Because the breakdown happened after passengers had already boarded, dozens of flights left on schedule but without most of the bags that should have been loaded.
The flights affected were mainly operated by TUI Airways, alongside several other charter and low-cost carriers. Routes included Rhodes, Dalaman, Paphos, Ibiza, resorts in Italy and Spain, and Scottish domestic destinations.
Birmingham Airport said the vast majority of outbound baggage is now traveling as planned. Even so, hundreds of items were still being sent on separately, with a dedicated team delivering luggage to hotels after they missed their original flights.
For passengers, the problem quickly became expensive. Travelers in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, and Spain described paying hundreds of euros for replacement clothes, medicine, and other essentials while they waited for updates.
Former ABTA chair Alistair Rowland said it's rare for an entire flight-load of bags to be left behind in this way, and that delayed luggage is usually routed through within 24 to 48 hours. In this case, no flights were canceled or significantly delayed, but hundreds of travelers were still affected, and the airport hasn't given a firm timeline for when the cleanup will be complete.
If your luggage was caught up in this disruption, keep receipts for any essential items you had to buy. When bags are delayed after a technical problem within airline or airport control, passengers may be able to claim those costs back.

What to do if your flight is delayed, canceled, or overbooked
If you're traveling to, from, or within the European Union, here's what you should do when you experience a disruption.
Gather evidence that your flight was delayed, canceled, or overbooked.
Get the airline to provide written confirmation of the disruption and the reason behind it.
Request an alternative flight to your destination — or a refund if you no longer wish to travel.
Make a note of the arrival time at your final destination.
Ask the airline to provide vouchers for meals and refreshments.
Avoid signing documents or accepting offers that may waive your passenger rights.
If an overnight stay is required, ask the airline to provide accommodation.
Save receipts for any additional expenses caused by the disruption.
