Over 260 Malaysian Umrah pilgrims were stranded in Madinah and Jeddah due to regional airspace closures and suspended commercial flights. Umrah operators have rerouted return journeys, with Tiram Travel securing seats on operating airlines and the first returns set for 3 March 2026. One operator shifted affected travelers from Malaysia Airlines to AirAsia where possible, while other staged departures were canceled. Travel firms are covering accommodation, meals, and transport. Malaysian diplomatic missions and agencies are coordinating support and return logistics; all contacted Malaysians are reported safe.

Umrah travel companies have reorganized return flights for Malaysian pilgrims after regional airspace closures and suspended commercial services left more than 260 travelers stranded in Madinah and Jeddah. The disruption, linked to escalating conflict in the Middle East, has resulted in both delays and cancellations across affected routes.

Tiram Travel Sdn Bhd reported securing new arrangements with airlines still operating, enabling the first group of pilgrims to depart for Malaysia on 3 March 2026. One operator said around 80 pilgrims under its care were in Jeddah and Madinah. Original bookings with Malaysia Airlines were replaced with seats on AirAsia flights when available to facilitate repatriation. Another group of about 150 pilgrims remained in Madinah after staged departures planned from the previous Sunday were canceled. Operators stated they aim to fly pilgrims home directly, subject to seat availability and confirmation of safe airspace.

While rerouting efforts continue, travel companies have assumed responsibility for the welfare of affected passengers. Dhia Travel confirmed it is covering all additional costs, including hotel stays, meals, and ground transportation, and will not charge pilgrims extra. Operational teams, mutawwifs (pilgrimage guides), and the Haramain operations team in Saudi Arabia are monitoring conditions and assisting with coordination to maintain safety and comfort.

Malaysia’s Consulate-General in Jeddah, together with Lembaga Tabung Haji and Umrah agencies, is supporting accommodation, meals, and return flight coordination. According to official updates, the broader security and airspace situation in Saudi Arabia is assessed as stable despite regional disruptions. Wisma Putra is engaging with commercial airlines to expedite restored schedules and ensure safe repatriation. All contacted Malaysians are reported safe, and consular assistance remains available for temporary lodging and travel logistics.

Passengers affected by these changes are advised to follow guidance from their tour operators and keep in close contact regarding updated flight details, as routing and seat availability may change based on operational constraints and airspace confirmations.

Know your rights

These are your air passenger rights:

When your flight's disrupted, you have rights. Most passenger protection laws cover the following:

Rerouting or refund
If your flight is canceled, your airline must provide an alternative. Some laws say you can choose a full refund instead.

Food and essential care
Providing food and drinks is a basic right under many regulations. Typically after a delay of a few hours.

Accommodation
Some passenger rights say the airline must provide accommodation when your journey is delayed overnight.

Compensation
Good passenger rights ensure passengers get fairly compensated for delays and cancellations. Try our compensation check and find out how much money we can get you.

This advice is provided to help you if your flight is delayed or canceled. However, the exact care and compensation you are entitled to will depend on your specific circumstances and flight. Always follow the directions of your airline, particularly with regard to check-in and boarding times.
