Best winter sun destinations: where's warm from November to February

The days are getting shorter and the coats are coming out. The good news: you don't have to fly far to find sunshine. Here are our favorite winter sun destinations, how warm they really get, and two things most travel lists forget: how reliably flights land there on time, and how to keep your right to compensation if your flight goes wrong.

The on-time figures come from AirHelp's own flight data for arrivals at each destination's main airports, from November 2025 to March 2026 — covering last winter.

The best winter sun destinations

1. Canary Islands

If you want genuine beach weather in January, this is the safest bet in Europe. The south coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria stay in the low 20s all winter, the sea hovers around 20°C, and evenings are mild enough for dinner outside. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are a little breezier, which surfers love.

Getting there: the Canaries' airports landed around 4 in 5 flights on time last winter. On Tenerife, the south airport was the more punctual of the two (81.2% on time), and it's closer to the sunnier resorts, too.

2. Madeira

Madeira is often called the island of eternal spring, and in winter that's about right. It's less about beaches and more about cliff-top hikes, gardens and very good wine. Bring a layer for the mountains.

Getting there: Madeira's airport is known for tricky crosswinds, and it showed last winter: only 72% of flights landed on time, the lowest on our list. Leave some slack in your plans, and avoid a tight connection on the way home.

3. Cyprus

Cyprus is still warm enough for a swim in November, and pleasantly mild in December. Expect quiet beaches, ancient ruins and long lunches in the sun. By January, it's better for sightseeing than sunbathing.

Getting there: Larnaca and Paphos both landed about 3 in 4 flights on time. Cancellations were higher than elsewhere, partly because of Middle East airspace disruption in early 2026, which was outside the airports' control. Larnaca has more flights, so it's easier to get rebooked if something goes wrong.

4. Malta

Malta is small, sunny and easy to get around, with honey-colored cities, harbors and plenty to do on a cooler day. November is the sweet spot. December and January suit walking more than swimming.

Getting there: Malta International landed 78.7% of flights on time last winter, right in the middle of our list.

5. Andalusia and the Algarve

Spain's south coast and southern Portugal won't give you beach heat in midwinter, but they will give you blue skies, quieter cities and lower prices. Think Seville's orange trees or a coastal walk in the Algarve, without the summer crowds.

Getting there: this is where the region really shines. Seville was the most punctual airport on our list (83.5% on time), and Faro, the Algarve's airport, came second (81.5%). Málaga, the gateway to the Costa del Sol, landed 79% of flights on time.

6. Marrakech

Marrakech is warm and sunny by day in November, with cold desert nights, so pack something cozy. It's a great pick for food, markets and riads rather than a beach break.

7. Further afield: Egypt's Red Sea and Cape Verde

If the low 20s won't cut it, Egypt's Red Sea coast and Cape Verde stay warmer still through the winter months. Just check the rights section below before you book the flight home.

Which winter sun airports run on time?

Warm weather is only half the story. A delay at either end can eat into a short break, so we checked how often flights actually landed on time at each destination's main airports last winter.

On time means landing within 15 minutes of schedule. "Delayed or canceled" covers flights that landed 15 minutes or more late, plus cancellations. Based on AirHelp flight data for arrivals from November 2025 to March 2026. Figures for Tenerife North and Gran Canaria are based on a smaller share of flights.

Short delays are common everywhere: about 1 in 5 flights ran at least 15 minutes late. Long ones are rare, though. Fewer than 1 in 100 flights at any airport on our list landed three or more hours late. And over the full year to September 2026, Seville still came out on top.

Check your own flight's track record

Our airport numbers show how last winter played out across thousands of flights. But you're not flying "to Tenerife". You're on one specific flight, and some flights are far more reliable than others.

The free AirHelp app shows the last 90 days of history for your flight, so you can see how often it has run late or been canceled before you head to the airport. If your flight has a habit of running behind, you can plan around it: leave more time for a connection, book the airport transfer a little later, or choose an earlier departure next time.

And if something does go wrong on the day, the app alerts you and tells you whether you could be owed compensation.

How do you protect your winter sun trip?

EC 261, the EU's flight delay law, covers every flight departing from an EU airport, on any airline. On the way home, it depends on where you're flying from:

  • Within the EU (the Canaries, Madeira, Cyprus, Malta, mainland Spain and Portugal), you're covered both ways, on any airline. If you land three or more hours late for a reason within the airline's control, you could be owed up to €600.

  • From outside the EU (Morocco, Egypt, Cape Verde), the flight home is only covered if an EU airline operates it. On a non-EU airline, you may have no compensation rights for that leg at all.

That three-hour mark matters: it's the point where compensation can kick in. A few more tips:

  • Book connections on one ticket. If a late first flight makes you miss the second, the airline has to get you there. Here's what to know about missed connections.

  • Know the border rules. If you're not an EU citizen, landing in the Canaries, Madeira, Malta or mainland Spain and Portugal now means registering with the EU's Entry/Exit System. Allow a little extra time.

  • Fly early in the day. If things go wrong, there are more flights left to rebook you onto.

What to know before you book

  • November is the bargain month. It's warm, quiet and usually cheaper than the Christmas rush.

  • Christmas and New Year fill up fast. If you're traveling over the holidays, book flights early.

  • "Warm" means different things. Only the Canaries are reliably beach-warm from December to February. Elsewhere, think sunny strolls rather than sunbathing.

  • Pick your side of the island. In the Canaries and Madeira, the south is usually sunnier than the north.

  • Choose your airport, too. Where you have a choice, the data can help: Tenerife South beat Tenerife North last winter, and Seville beat Málaga.
