A delayed flight is a daily risk for global travelers. Millions of flights are delayed or canceled every year, leaving passengers stranded in unfamiliar airports, missing crucial connections, and absorbing unexpected costs.

While laws like Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 (EC 261) offer strong legal backing, they don't cover every situation. Airlines can refuse compensation when a delay is caused by extraordinary circumstances outside their control, such as severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, or strikes by airport or ground handling staff. Passengers still keep their right to care and to a refund or re-routing, but the compensation itself may be off the table.

That is where comprehensive travel delay protection comes in. By combining statutory passenger rights with proactive travel insurance and memberships like AirHelp+, you can secure both fast financial relief and long-term legal compensation.

Travel Delay Protection vs EC 261

As mentioned previously, EC 261 is an excellent legal recourse for passengers when a disruption is within the airline's control.. The law can enable you to receive up to 600€ for travel disruptions.

What if the airline isn’t at fault?

There are certain conditions when EC 261 does not apply (for example, it only  covers flights leaving the EU, or arriving in the EU on a European carrier) in these cases it’s important for passengers to be protected in the case of flight delays.

Not all flight delay protections operate the same way. Standard travel insurance policies generally reimburse expenses incurred when your flight is delayed beyond a specific threshold (typically 3 to 6 hours). Unlike regulatory compensation, travel delay insurance covers disruptions regardless of whether the airline was at fault.

If your flight (which is not covered by EC 261 regulation) is grounded due to extreme weather, severe air traffic congestion, or ground crew strikes, travel delay insurance steps in to cover essential expenses:

  • Overnight Accommodation: Hotel rooms and transfers if you are stranded overnight.

  • Meals and Refreshments: Food and beverages during prolonged waits at the terminal.

  • Transport: Taxis, shuttles, or ride-share services to and from your temporary accommodation.

  • Emergency Essentials: Toiletries and clothing if your checked luggage is delayed or lost.

Do you need Travel Delay Insurance?

Traveling internationally involves complex itineraries, multiple connecting flights, and varying regional air rights. When things go wrong, relying solely on the airline or EC 261 may not be the best solution.

What can added protection do for you?

  • A Safety Net: Insurance can cover costs you would otherwise pay yourself, within your policy's limits and excess..

  • Faster cash flow: formal claims against airlines can take weeks or months to resolve. Certain memberships and policies pay out a fixed amount as soon as the delay passes a set threshold, giving you cash on the spot.

  • Protection for Connecting Flights: A minor 45-minute delay on an inbound international leg can cause a missed connection. Specialized protection guarantees financial support for these situations.

When is Travel Delay Insurance needed?

Understanding what causes delays helps you prepare for disruptions before arriving at the departure gate. In most cases, these are the situations in which passengers are not eligible for EC 261 compensation, for which you will require travel delay insurance:

  • Severe Weather: heavy snow, severe crosswinds, natural disasters and low visibility,

  • Security alerts: when passenger and crew safety is not guaranteed, flights will be delayed until the threat has passed.

  • Airport Ground Staff Strikes: Work stoppages by baggage handlers, security personnel, or air traffic controllers can cause severe delays.

FAQ

What is the difference between EC 261 compensation and travel insurance payouts?

Airline compensation is a statutory payment made by the airline under regulations like EC 261 (up to €600). It is payable unless the disruption was caused by extraordinary circumstances outside the airline's control, and it can take weeks to collect..

An AirHelp+ payout is an insurance benefit (€100–€200) paid directly to you within days of a qualifying disruption.

Does trip delay insurance cover delays caused by bad weather?

Yes. While airlines are generally exempt from paying statutory compensation for weather delays, travel delay insurance and AirHelp+ payouts cover weather-related disruptions.

What if a delay causes me to miss a connection?

On top of the compensation you’re owed for missed connections, we’ll transfer €200 for your flight disruption.

Do I still get my full airline compensation if I already received an AirHelp+ insurance payout?

Yes. The AirHelp+ payout is a fixed insurance benefit provided directly to you, whereas compensation (up to €600 under EC 261) is paid by the airline. You are entitled to keep both. Furthermore, as an AirHelp+ member, 0% service fees are deducted from your compensation.
