Disruption overview

Travel plans through Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila will stay disrupted after Philippine Airlines extended the suspension of its routes to Hamad International Airport in Doha and Dubai International Airport. Flights between Manila and Doha are canceled through 30 June 2026, with the 1 July 2026 Doha to Manila sector also removed, while Manila to Dubai services are suspended until at least 2 August 2026. The airline says the decision reflects continuing security risks, unstable airspace, and limited routing options across parts of the Gulf. Passengers can choose free rebooking, travel credits with a 20% bonus, or full refunds, but compensation under EC 261 is unlikely where the law applies because the disruption is tied to events outside the airline's control.

Disruption details

In an advisory issued on 11 May 2026, Philippine Airlines extended the suspension of its services from Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila to Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, and Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates after a fresh safety review pointed to continuing risks in the Middle East.

Flights between Manila and Doha will stay canceled through 30 June 2026, and the 1 July 2026 Doha to Manila sector has also been scrapped. Manila to Dubai services are now suspended until at least 2 August 2026.

For passengers, this means more weeks of canceled trips, missed onward connections, and last-minute travel changes if you were due to pass through Manila, Doha, or Dubai. The affected services are PR 684 and PR 685 on the Doha route, and PR 658 and PR 659 on the Dubai route.

The airline says the longer suspension follows an updated safety assessment. It pointed to heightened regional instability, including drone strikes, missile interceptions, intermittent airspace closures, and severely limited routing options across parts of the Gulf.

Safety remains the airline's top priority, and it says it is monitoring the situation daily. Flights between Manila and Riyadh are still operating for now, but schedules could change if conditions worsen.

If your booking has been affected, Philippine Airlines says you can choose from:

  • Free rebooking on alternative dates

  • Travel credits for unused tickets, with a 20% bonus

  • Full refunds

Refunds may take a little time. Philippine Airlines expects to process them in about 8 days on its side, and banks may then need another 2 to 4 weeks to post the money back to your account. If you booked through a third-party travel agent, you'll need to contact the agent directly.

The extension comes as airlines across the Gulf continue to deal with security alerts and sudden airspace restrictions. In recent weeks, airlines have rerouted flights or cut services after warnings about possible attacks on critical infrastructure and rapidly changing operating conditions.

Because these cancellations are linked to external security threats and airspace measures outside the airline's control, compensation under EC 261 is unlikely where that law applies. But that doesn't mean you're without support. If your flight was canceled, you should still be offered rebooking or a refund, and during long delays or overnight disruption, care such as food, refreshments, accommodation, transportation to that accommodation, and help with communication may also be required depending on your journey.

Know your rights

These are your air passenger rights

When your flight's disrupted, you may be entitled to various forms of care and compensation under EC 261 and other applicable laws.

Rerouting or refund

If your flight is canceled, your airline must provide an alternative. You may also get a full refund if you no longer wish to travel.

Care and assistance

Your airline must provide food and refreshments if your journey is delayed more than a few hours.

Accommodation

If you are away from home and your journey is delayed overnight, the airline must offer you accommodation and transportation to it.

Communication

Under EC 261 you are entitled to 2 phone calls or emails if your journey is delayed over 1 hour. No compensation when a disruption is caused by extraordinary circumstances, as this appears to be.

This advice is provided to help you if your flight is delayed or canceled. However, the exact care and compensation you are entitled to will depend on your specific circumstances and flight. Always follow the directions of your airline, particularly with regard to check-in and boarding times.

What to do if your flight is delayed, canceled, or overbooked

If you're traveling to, from, or within the European Union, here's what you should do when you experience a disruption.

Gather evidence that your flight was delayed, canceled, or overbooked.

Get the airline to provide written confirmation of the disruption and the reason behind it.

Request an alternative flight to your destination — or a refund if you no longer wish to travel.

Make a note of the arrival time at your final destination.

Ask the airline to provide vouchers for meals and refreshments.

Avoid signing documents or accepting offers that may waive your passenger rights.

If an overnight stay is required, ask the airline to provide accommodation.

Save receipts for any additional expenses caused by the disruption.

Share it with your friends!
