Compensation for delayed Lufthansa flight

Even though airlines like Lufthansa strive to keep to their scheduled times, flights can still arrive late. Fortunately, as a traveller, you are protected by airline passenger rights when Lufthansa flights are delayed.

Since Lufthansa is based in the EU, almost all of its flights are protected by EC 261, one of the most comprehensive laws protecting air passenger rights worldwide.

EC Regulation 261 grants passengers the right to seek compensation when they have experienced delayed, cancelled, or overbooked flights that are not their fault.

There are some exceptional circumstances that may exempt airlines from paying compensation, such as bad weather or problems at the airport. However, if the delay is caused by technical problems or a strike by airline staff, you are likely to be owed compensation under Regulation (EC) No. 261/2004.

In addition, you generally have up to 3 years to file a Lufthansa flight delay compensation claim. All you need to do is enter your flight details and our easy-to-use flight delay compensation calculator will tell you if you are entitled to monetary compensation and our team of experts will be on hand to help you get it.

Lufthansa Flight Cancellation Compensation

If your Lufthansa flight has been cancelled, European laws on air passenger rights state that you have the right to alternative transportation to your destination or a refund from Lufthansa.

If you received a cancellation notice from Lufthansa less than 14 days before your scheduled departure, you may also be eligible to claim compensation of up to {{ec261compensation} per person.

When Lufthansa cancels flights, it will usually attempt to rebook passengers on another flight at no extra cost. If this does not work for you, you may request other changes or choose to no longer take the trip.

If Lufthansa books you a new flight that arrives at a similar time to your original flight, it is not required to pay compensation. This is because your plans will have minimal disruption. However, in many cases, passengers whose flights are cancelled at the last minute have the right to file a claim for compensation against Lufthansa.

These rights do not apply if the flight cancellation was caused by an event beyond Lufthansa's control, such as severe weather conditions or an accident at the airport. Such events are referred to as exceptional circumstances.

Flight Compensation and Air Passenger Rights

Because Lufthansa has its headquarters within the EU, almost all the flights they offer are protected by EC 261, one of the world's most comprehensive air passenger rights laws. Additionally, you may be covered by the equivalent UK passenger rights law, so called "UK 261", depending on the flight.

The EC 261 regulation gives passengers the right to claim for compensation when they have suffered delayed, cancelled or overbooked flights, which are no fault of their own. Passengers are also entitled to claim for past flights — often you can still claim for flights in the past 3 years.
