Ryanair Strike: Compensation

Updated on 11.08.2022

_In August many flights operated by Ryanair will be cancelled due to staff or pilot strikes. We want to remind you that flight cancellations due to these staff strikes are eligible for compensation if you were informed by Ryanair less than 14 days before your flight.

Summer Strike Update: Ryanair crews in several countries are planning strike action, which is likely to cause widespread disruption:

UK: 18th, 19th September 2019
Spain: 1st, 2nd, 6th, 8th, 13th, 15th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, 27th, 28th, & 29th September 2019

If your flight is severely delayed or cancelled due to these strikes you are entitled to compensation.

Ryanair has been known to be uncooperative when it comes to paying out compensation for strike claims. Use AirHelp to make your claim and you won’t be taking on Ryanair alone. Ryanair Strike Compensation: Know Your Rights

If you’ve been affected by a Ryanair strike, then you’ve come to the right place. You may be entitled to up to £520 in compensation if you experienced delays or cancellations due to an airline strike. We can help you make a claim under EU law.

Eligibility for Ryanair Strike Compensation

As air passengers, we are protected by a piece of EU law called EC 261. It holds airlines financially accountable for flight disruptions that they are responsible for. That includes flight disruptions due to airline staff strikes. So if your flight was cancelled due to a strike, you may be eligible for compensation under the EC 261 regulations. The law regarding this particular situation was clarified only as recently as 2018. The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, ruled that disruption caused by airline employee strikes qualifies for compensation as the airline is considered responsible for the behaviour of their own staff.

You can find out more about EC 261 and your air passenger rights here.

Airline staff strikes are strikes involving the employees of Ryanair. That includes pilots, cabin crew, airline engineers, and other employees working directly for Ryanair. If you book a flight which is disrupted because of a staff strike, Ryanair may owe you compensation to make up for the trouble caused.

We believe that air passenger rights should always come first – if an airline strike with Ryanair causes or caused your flight to be delayed, cancelled, or even result in a denied boarding, you can make a claim for compensation.

When am I Not Eligible for Strike Compensation from Ryanair?

You are not eligible for strike compensation if the strike is one that Ryanair has no control over. For example:

  • Strikes by airport security staff

  • Strikes by baggage handlers

  • Strikes by air traffic management staff

  • Strikes caused by political unrest

While Ryanair staff strikes are within the control of Ryanair, all other strikes are considered to be “extraordinary circumstances”. Extraordinary circumstances are any events or situations that are completely beyond the airline’s control and cannot be avoided, even if reasonable measures have been taken to protect against them. In such cases, Ryanair is not at fault.
