Airlines from Asia among the top carriers of the world

AuthorThe AirHelper

No European neither American airlines have reached the top in the latest Business Insider’s ranking of Top 20 airlines for 2014. There was no room for such giants as KLM, Air France, British Airways, Alitalia or American Airlines. Is it due to the number of flight delays and cancellations European customers experience? To great extent. The ranking is dominated by Asian carriers and the winner is… Singapore Airlines. Congrats!

The best airline from Europe appears to be Lufthansa, yet in the ranking it only managed to get the eighth position. No luck for the US airlines either. There is no American Airlines or United Airlines among the world’s top 20. The ranking is dominated by airlines based in Asia and the Middle East. The top 5 positions have been taken by Singapore Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Qatar Airways, Asiana Airlines and Malaysia Airlines.

Why do European airlines look rather poor according to the ranking? They face serious problems in relation to on-time performance, whereas Asian airlines seem to cope with it pretty well. This is at least what the ranking shows, and timely departures and arrivals was one of two main factors taken into account when creating the Top 20 list.

Business Insider ranked the biggest airlines that fly long-haul routes, and this annual list is based on the two main factors: an enjoyable experience in the plane and timely departure and arrival. The in-flight experience was evaluated with great help of the airline reviewer Skytrax, whereas on-time performance figures were provided by  Flightstats.com. The figures taken into account include all flights from April 1, 2014, to May 31, 2014 for each airline.

The two categories were combined, however the in-flight experience was weighted more heavily (70 %). All ratings are out of 100 points. And here is the whole ranking. We hope next year more European airlines will find their place there. You just have to work hard on the on-time performance guys!
